In July 1940 at least 65 art works were removed from the monastery in order to protect them from aeroplane bombing and other destructive consequences of war. Yet they were newer returned. Among the most important missing art works are certainly the polyptych Madonna and Child with Saints painted by Cima da Conegliano (1513), the altarpiece Veneration of Jesus’ Name with Saints by Benedetto Carpaccio (1541) and Lamentation by Gerolamo da Santacroce. Also valuable liturgical vessels, vestments and altar cloths, precious books (among them 59 incunables), and relics of Monaldus da Capodistria have remained in Italy. The Slovenian state as well as the church authorities and especially the Franciscans themselves have been doing their best to have the removed art works returned to their original place.
